American Military Operation on Venezuela Raises Fears of Potential Danish Territory Annexation.

The recent American military action in Venezuela and the capture of its president have renewed unease regarding Washington's designs on Greenland. Supporters of the ex-president's base have reportedly focused on the vast island following the events in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Posts and Diplomatic Backlash

Only hours following the commencement of the Caracas operation, a well-known right-wing commentator, who is married to a high-ranking presidential adviser, shared a suggestive image. The graphic depicted Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, accompanied by cryptic caption: "COMING."

This blatant suggestion to annex the resource-abundant land, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, triggered swift and strong condemnation from Danish representatives.

"Denmark and the US are close allies and should continue to work together as such. American security is also Greenland’s and Denmark’s security," stated the Danish ambassador to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to ensure security in the Arctic."

The ambassador additionally highlighted that the kingdom had significantly increased its military budget this year, earmarking a large amount specifically for Arctic and regional security. "And yes, we expect complete recognition for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Administrative Moves and Geopolitical Goals

The tensions were additionally complicated by the recent appointment of a Southern governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The governor had publicly expressed gratitude to the commander-in-chief, stating it was an "honour" to serve in a volunteer capacity to "bring Greenland into the US."

After the military action in Venezuela, this envoy commended the administration's decisive move, connecting it to the wider "fight against narcotics."

Ever since returning to office, the US president has consistently unnerved transatlantic allies with his stated interest in Greenland. The island is considered vitally important for national security and potential resource extraction. It currently hosts the northernmost US military base.

Leaving the Door Open to Force

In a notable television appearance, the president refused to rule out the use of armed action to gain control of Greenland. This stance comes amid growing global competition in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He characterized Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for international security."

Growing Friction and Indigenous Opposition

In response to this constant "rhetoric" of intent, Denmark's security agency took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "security risk."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland issued a unified and stern statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot annex other countries."

Surveys in Greenland shows a nuanced sentiment. While a vast majority of the territory's inhabitants seek self-rule from Denmark, there is simultaneously little to no desire to join the United States. The island has had the option to declare sovereignty for over a decade.

Analyst View: A Credible Scenario?

Some experts are increasingly reconsidering the possibility of such a move. One thinktank analyst specializing in military analysis admitted she had previously dismissed the rhetoric but was "now not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to station a few hundred or a couple thousand soldiers inside of Greenland, and it's unclear to me which power could intervene about it," she concluded.
