Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect behind many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks made him a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her US tour following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles mourns the loss to a true visionary whose impact on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
