Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
