Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people perished and over 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
