Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Music Superstar and Cultural Figure, Dies at 81 Years of Age
Global audiences grieves the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican-born musician and performer whose distinctive voice was instrumental in spreading the reggae genre across the globe. The artist has died at the age of eighty-one.
“With deep sorrow that I share that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am grateful for his family, close friends, peers in the arts and coworkers who walked with him on his journey. To all his fans globally, please know that your support was his strength during his entire professional life … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” The message was also signed by their children, their son and daughter.
Cliff gained fame for hits including You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat sound and positive spirit brought him a large and longstanding fanbase.
Beyond his musical accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 drama film The Harder They Come, a role that received critical praise and is considered a landmark of Jamaican cinema.
Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of musicians, alongside Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
