In a significant escalation, Ukrainian forces have employed British-made Storm Shadow missiles to strike a key Russian oil processing facility. This strike was carried out Thursday, as stated by the country's military authorities.

Attack Particulars and Strategic Impact

The plant in question, the Novoshakhtinsk oil plant, was said to be hit, with multiple blasts observed at the site. This represents not the first instance where Ukrainian forces has utilized these advanced British-supplied missiles against targets on Russian territory.

Military spokespersons noted that the Novoshakhtinsk plant serves as one of the primary suppliers of petrol products in southern Russia and is directly involved in supplying the military of the Russian Federation.

Political Discussions on the War Front

Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held productive talks with representatives of ex-President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks focused on potential pathways to end the war.

“We had a very productive conversation: many details, constructive proposals, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy wrote on a social media platform. “We explored some fresh concepts on how to bring real peace closer, and it concerns approaches, potential summits, and, of course, the schedule.”

Legal Crackdown Inside the Country

Meanwhile, in a domestic matter, a Russian court has found guilty a pro-war activist and opponent of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the Left Front movement, was given to six years in prison.

The charges reportedly stem from an online post Udaltsov published backing another group of activists charged with forming a terrorist group. Udaltsov has rejected the charges as politically motivated and, after the sentencing, reportedly announced to go on a hunger strike in protest.

International Detainee Situation

The Kremlin indicated it is in contact with French officials regarding the fate of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar currently serving a three-year sentence in Russia and reportedly facing new charges of spying.

A spokesperson stated that Russia has presented a proposal to France regarding Vinatier, and now “the ball is in France’s court.” President Emmanuel Macron’s office stated he is monitoring the situation, with all state resources mobilised to provide consular support and advocate for his liberation at the earliest opportunity.

Symbolic Reconstruction in Mariupol

A theatre in Mariupol, which was leveled in a devastating bombardment while many civilians were sheltering in its cellar, is set to reopen. Authorities in control have heralded the rebuilding as a symbol of recovery.

Conversely, previous staff from the theatre have called the reopening as “a macabre spectacle.” The reconstruction is part of a broader Kremlin effort to present its rule in seized territories, a process that includes the arrest or exile of critics and confiscation of assets from Ukrainian citizens.

The theatre is expected to open by the month's end with a show of a Russian fairytale, having been rebuilt largely anew over the last 24 months.
