Forecasters are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with snowfall anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Continue Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, unlike last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," noted the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

Heading into Friday, weather warnings have been issued for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Set to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to plummet as snowfall and high winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Alerts Issued

In addition, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
