New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD issued security footage Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries were reported.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder issue that required surgery.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
