NY Unveils Portal for Residents to Report ICE Footage After Arrests of 4 US Citizens

The state AG has introduced a fresh online portal asking residents to submit visual evidence of ICE operations around New York. This action comes just a shortly after a major ICE raid rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, triggering widespread outcry.

American Citizens Held In Enforcement Action

A lawmaker disclosed during a Wednesday press conference that four US citizens were detained and held for "nearly 24 hours" following the enforcement action. Protests erupted in New York on consecutive evenings.

"All New York residents is entitled to exist without intimidation," state officials declared in a release.

"For those who saw and recorded immigration enforcement recently, I urge you to provide that material with my office. We are pledged to examining these accounts and investigating any wrongdoings."

Portal Features

The form includes options to submit images and video footage of the raid, as well as a field to specify location information. When submitting, submitters must mark a option that states that "the attorney general might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, such as in a court case or public report."

Details of the Manhattan Operation

The Chinatown raid, which onlookers say featured over fifty federal agents, occurred in a well-known district of the city where fake purses, items, goods and merchandise are commonly traded en masse – often to sightseers.

Footage of the incident depict numerous hooded and equipped federal agents restraining and arresting a individual, and forcing aside onlookers. Crowds of New Yorkers trailed the officers through the streets. An armored military vehicle was also seen rolling through the city streets.

Leadership Statements

At a news conference held with the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democratic representative, stated that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be taken for no reason." He noted the persons were freed on Wednesday with no accusations made.

"There's a clear purpose here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman said. "This is a armed campaign to provoke unrest. It is merely a pretext to generate turmoil for federal officials to utilize the military to stop violence that they have created."

Broad Criticism

Fury over the immigration operation escalated – all three NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the incident, along with Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Yet again, the federal government opts for authoritarian theatrics that create fear, not safety. It has to end," a contender stated.

NYC immigrant rights groups voiced concern also.

"Immigration agents descended on Chinatown in NYC with military-style vehicles, covered personnel and protective equipment to go after local sellers attempting to earn income. This raid had nothing to do with citizen protection and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and communities," remarked the head of a rights organization.

Agency Rules

Official guidelines bans the detention of US citizens and the agency has said it will not arrest or detain citizens. Nevertheless, independent reporting has discovered that over 170 US citizens have been detained unlawfully by federal agents since the beginning of the current administration.

Recent Pattern

Enforcement actions have been cropping up increasingly in the state and across the US recently.

An October operation in the city center was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the current administration. Demonstrations against ICE are ubiquitous as are claims of violence and abusive practices.

Recently, a letter provided by advocacy organizations stated medical neglect of pregnant women in ICE facilities.
