According to a former high-ranking official from the UK's largest police force, police departments are now required to disclose the ethnic backgrounds of suspects in response to a rise in far-right speculation on online networks.

Case Study: Train Stabbing in a UK County

Early Sunday, British Transport Police announced the detainment of two individuals following a mass stabbing aboard a train in Cambridgeshire. One suspect, a 32-year-old black British national, and a second, a 35-year-old British national with Caribbean roots, were taken into custody. Later, the 35-year-old was released with no charges, and authorities confirmed he was not involved in the attack.

Updated Protocols to Fight False Claims

This past summer, new guidelines were issued to tackle the spread of misinformation on social media, which had intensified after the tragic murder of young students in Southport previously.

However, advocates warned that this approach could lead to an excessive focus on the racial background of suspects and fuel further rightwing conspiracy theories when details are not shared with the public.

Insights from a Former Officer

Dal Babu, who worked in the Metropolitan Police, labeled the requirement for law enforcement to reveal the race of suspects in incidents involving ethnic minorities as an "unintended consequence".

“At the time the guidelines were introduced, I cautioned that there might be a risk of police being expected to disclose details in every instance,” he said.

He voiced understanding for his ex-peers in the police, noting that they are “damned if they do and damned if they don’t”. “Pressure mounts due to rampant far-right speculation on social media following significant events, focusing on suspect backgrounds.”

Political Reaction

A Conservative MP, whose constituency includes the area where the train halted, called it “unfortunate” but essential for police to swiftly release the racial identities of those detained.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he commented, stating that social media are leveraged to push agendas, making it critical for law enforcement to provide accurate information to counter speculation.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Before the police announcement, conservative figures had called for a faster response. For instance, Chris Philp urged for timely release of suspect information, while the Reform UK leader posted on X that the people should be informed “without delay”.

Moreover, far-right social media accounts attempted to exploit the event. A profile named “UK Nationalist”—with nearly 5,000 followers—shared an baseless allegation that a knife-wielding man had been shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

Ongoing Suspicion

Even after police confirmed that the suspects were British nationals, certain individuals continued to suggest that details was being withheld. A former Reform UK co-leader claimed it was “hard to believe” that the incident was unrelated to terrorism, despite police assurances indicating otherwise.

Origin of the Directives

The guidance were created by the UK police leadership body in recognition of “public concerns” and to ensure police processes were “effective in today’s fast-paced information era”.

The initiative came soon after Reform UK alleged that officials of concealing the details and immigration status of individuals charged in a different incident in a UK county.

Previous Instances

In May, when a vehicle drove into spectators celebrating a football victory, Merseyside police revealed that the arrested man was a white UK national to dispels myths of a terrorist attack by an Asian man.

Police leaders stressed that decisions on disclosing these details would remain with individual police forces, taking into account broader moral and legal factors. Verifying a suspect’s immigration status would be handled by the Home Office, not law enforcement.
