Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Returning to a role you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Characters
Reports have confirmed that three different characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though dying in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return is still unclear. Fans should prepare for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first time since a small cameo is a long-held wish, though he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The actor vividly recalls the exact moment he got the news from the series creator.
"I recall the conversation. I recall the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he says. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the decades since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he explains. "A part that is now represented in every single Ghostface mask that appears every Halloween."
The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about not wanting to be the one who damages the popular franchise.
"It's either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Theories and Anticipation Run High
While many longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others return remains. Maybe they live as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a prior storyline. Alternatively, maybe they are somehow all alive in a bizarre shared situation. The possibility of a self-referential story, reminiscent of classic horror movies, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
