The Former French President Preparing to Release Prison Memoir Documenting Two Dozen Days In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a memoir in the coming weeks called Notes from a Cell, chronicling his time endured behind bars.

This news was made less than two weeks following Sarkozy was released while he contests his conviction on charges of illegal collaboration connected to efforts to secure presidential race money from the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Inside jail one sees little, and nothing to do,” he notes in one passage, indicating the book is more about his musings while in solitary confinement rather than wider commentary regarding the strained and crisis-hit French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, which is missing in La Santé, where noise is endless commotion,” he continues. “The din unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, inner life is fortified behind bars.”

Release Hearing: Recounting the Hardship

At his release request hearing, he was present via screen from a room in prison, describing his time inside as draining. He stated to the judge: “I wish to commend those working in the jail, showing great humanity, and who helped make this nightmare tolerable – as it truly is one.”

“I didn’t expect that at 70 years of age, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a trial forced upon me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, extremely tough. It leaves a mark on any prisoner due to its intensity.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, who served as France’s president between 2007 and 2012, set a precedent as past president in the European Union and the initial post-WWII figure from France to serve time in prison.

Before entering jail he had said he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Books in Prison

It remains unclear if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the texts he took into prison: a two-volume biography of Jesus together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, in which a blameless person is sentenced to jail later flees to take revenge.

Daily Reality

Sarkozy remained in solitary confinement for his own security in a room roughly 100 square feet with his own shower and toilet in the Paris jail located in the capital. Security personnel stayed in the next cell.

Sources mentioned that he consumed just yogurt during his stay due to concerns any food may have been contaminated. He had facilities for self-catering yet he declined, based on unnamed sources. Unclear remains if he will detail what he ate in prison.

Defense Viewpoint

Sarkozy’s lawyer, Christophe Ingrain each day during the incarceration, stated during proceedings he would be safer out of prison than inside. “He has faced menacing messages, heard shouts at night plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Legal Proceedings

He entered custody on 21 October following a French court sentenced him to a half-decade term for criminal conspiracy related to a plan to acquire political donations for his presidential bid.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, and a fresh trial is scheduled for early next year.
