Thrice-crowned National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic sustained a "gut-wrenching" knee injury when the Denver Nuggets were defeated by a score of 147-123 at the Miami Heat.

The Serbian center injured himself late in the first half during an accidental coming together with team-mate Jones.

The other player landed on the footwear of the big man, and he immediately went down to the court holding his knee.

The 30-year-old, who leads the NBA season in boards and assists, posted a score of 21 points and eight assists in the contest prior to incurring the setback.

He will have an MRI on Tuesday to determine the extent of the issue.

"Right away, he realized something was wrong," commented Denver head coach Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Anyone who suffers an injury, it's tough to see, most notably somebody as talented as Jokic. We'll find out more tomorrow."

"We'll move on together. Of course, at this moment, I am more concerned primarily about Jokic as a person and the letdown of facing an event of that nature."
